Want to know what the best small 4x4 cars are out on the market these days?  4x4's and SUV's are quite popular these days as a family vehicle which is both practical, safe and stylish.  the smaller 4x4's may be more preferable though due to their lower weight and better fuel economy.

There are so many out on the market these days its hard to say which would be the best, but a good place to start is to think about what exactly you need.

Do you need all wheel drive?  Do you want an engine with a lot of torque that runs efficiently off of diesel or do you just want to run petrol?

Regardless, if you're looking for the best small 4x4 cars, here is a list for you to get a quick idea on what your options are:

1. Mazda CX-5

This is one of the bigger "small 4x4 cars" on the list and while it may be a little slower than the competition at 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft torque, its got some great responsiveness and offers a comfortable driving experience.  There is an optional upgrade to the engine though with 184 horsepower.
This comes with front wheel drive with all wheel being an optional addition. As far as fuel economy goes, its 26mpg in the city and 35 on the highway.

Cruise control, a touchscreen display and bluetooth connectivity are standard and there are options for blind-spot monitoring w/ cross traffic alert and a collision mitigating braking system.

2.  Honda CR-V

This vehicle comes with 185 horsepower with 27mpg in the city and 34 on the highway.  It has a stylish and modern look to it on the outside and compared to previous year versions, the handling and brakes have been improved.

Front wheel drive is standard on this one however there is an optional all wheel drive.  This car averages between 24k and 34k, a very affordable vehicle that has great fuel economy as well as plenty of cargo room and spacious seating.

The only thing lacking would be a more powerful engine.

3. Nissan Qashqai

Another great addition to the crossover class, this one comes with 4 engine choices.  1.2 & 1.6L turbo petrol engines or 1.5/1.6L diesel engines.

Its got low running costs and its comfortable and practical.  It combines the elevated driving position with the versatility you get in an SUV, all in a much smaller package.  Even the basic version of this comes with some nice features like bluetooth phone connectability, air conditioning and cruise control.

Only downsides to this would be the rear visibility could be improved and the rear seats can be a bit cramped.

So if you're looking for the best small 4x4 cars, that list should get you started, other mentionables to check out would be the Suzuki SX4, Kia  Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi Q3.
